Goodwork is a Melbourne-based startup on a mission to help tradies across Australia grow their network and their business, so they can focus on doing good work.
Agency Goodwork (Reece Group) Role Product Designer Year 2018

PROJECT GOAL
I was brought into the business as the app launched in May 2018 as a Product Designer, working in a team to design new experiences and to improve existing ones.
The work involved deep diving on customer problems to understand what value we could deliver. This included customer research, ideation, rapid prototyping, and concept testing. Thinking about a holistic experience meant having a hand in designing the visual look and feel of the brand and marketing communications. The team worked with an illustrator to build brand characters, an icon set representing trades in app, and scenes of tradies working.
We used a design thinking process to deliver value for the customer. I worked across all phases of discover, define, develop, and deliver.
DISCOVER
We built a testing framework that meant we got to talk to tradies every month. The framework meant we could do ethnographic research by going to construction sites, observing, asking questions and also get fast feedback by testing new features with user testing.
I designed research approaches, conducted ethnographic research, and user testing sessions with over 25 tradies. The insights formed the direction of the product, impacting how we prioritise the backlog.

Define
Compiled findings with collaboration from the team. These insights were fed directly into product. They extended our personas and tradie archetypes/mindsets.

Insight gathered from user testing sessions - sorted into categories and aligned to features

Insight gathered from interviewing 6 tradies - mapped their career journeys

DEFINE & DEVELOP
We used team workshops with members from product, design, and technology all in the same room. By working this way we could ideate on the best possible solution for the customer.

Whiteboards are your best friend for team ideation sessions. Here is a working sketch flow for a user profile. With a concept idea of the Goodwork Rating, a way to rate and review fellow members.

Sometimes we need to be left to build mockups, then let our peers review for feedback. These often work as a sense check, or a reality check. Changes then get made and presented to the customer.

Mutiple prototypes for the various features were made. Invison, Proto.io with side scroll interactions are examples.
Design is never in isolation. We make flows of the entire experience of a feature to ensure is all makes sense and nothing is forgotten. Walking the team through the flows are a great way to find out if anything needs to be improved.

Develop & Deliver
A regular testing cadance was deleloped and gave us the oportunity to test ideas and developed decisions. I designed research sessions and interviewed over 25 tradies through 6 tesing sessions.

Final development design ready to be exported to developers via Zeplin.
