My role
I designed the South Australian state budget for 5 years. The design consultant gig involved working in house at the Department of Treasury and Finance. Packing up my mobile studio and relocating for a month each year. I produced the budget overview document, the document that summarised the budget into bite sized chunks.
The document we made in 2012 was the first time they had used colour and infographics as a way to convey the information and make it more accessible. Before this is was long copy, black and white, a little boring.
The design needed to be modular and easy to update. The reality of dealing with politics is that things change at the last minute. Over the three week period in house, up to 70 versions were produced. It was a 12 hour gig, 6 days a week!
I learnt a lot about stakeholder management during these projects! The importance of showing the right person early and often for feedback. And that you can make meaningful change to things that are normally done one way.
